Miss Eda Slyter, of Fontana Dragged To Death. Thrown From Viscious Horse. Her Foot Caught in the Stirrup and for Half a Mile She was at the Mercy of the Maddened Beast. Sunday afternoon about 4 o'clock a sad accident occured four miles west of Fontana. As a crowd of young people were returning from Sunday school at Liberty school house the horse which Miss Eda SLYTER was riding became frightened and started to run. She had nearly succeeded in checking it when in passing under a tree her hat caught and fell off which caused the horse to again start, and this time it became completely unmangeable. She was thrown from the horse and her foot hanging in the stirrup she was dragged for nearly half a mile. Mr. Wes. GRITTITH finally overtook them and jumping from his own horse caught the frightened animal and cut the stirrup strap letting her down. But it was too late, her neck was broken and her head and shoulders were badly crushed and bruised. Physicians wer summoned but nothing could be done and she died at 7:15 p.m. Miss Eda Slyter was a young lady well known and highly respected, having lived in this community since childhood. She was born 1874 and untied with the Christian church at this place in 1894. She leaves a father, mother, two brothers and a sister to mourn her death. Her father is nearly prostrated and is now lying very low, having been ill of heart disease at the time of the accident. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock by Rev. Perry McPHERSON of Paola. A large crowd of sympathizing friends followed the remains to rest in the Fontana cemetery. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad loss. ==== KS-FOOTSTEPS Mailing List ==== File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ks/linn/obits/s/slyter1204gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ksfiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb
