Stetter TimeTraveler303 March 29, 2008, 10:51 pm The Winona CLIPPER, Winona, Logan County, Kansas April 26, 1888 Bastardy and Incest. Two bastardy cases developed at the county seat the past week. One was brought by Cora POOL who caused the arrest of T. B. THORPE, a prominent real estate man. We have been unable to learn the result of the prelimination (sic) but understand the defendant can prove himself guiltless. The other case came to light on Monday when the daughter of J. R. TIPTON, a farmer living southeast of Russell Springs gave birth to an illegitimate child and preferred charges against her unnatural father as being the result of the offspring upon which charge he was arrested. He had a preliminary hearing and was bound over to district court but as Jude LYNCH was talked of trying the case he did not endeavor to get bail but was hurriedly taken to Hays City Jail Wednesday morning for safe keeping. The prosecuting witness, Cora POOL, who claims that THORPE is the father of her unborn child is in court and the court room is crowded. The prosecution is being conducted by A. M. GIBBONS while Attorney's MUNTZING and MILLER of Russell Springs are for the defense. There is no doubt but THORPE will be bound over to district court. The parents of the girl are present and the poor mother is more to be pitied than any. LATER.--Defendants motion for a continuance of 15 days to enable him to get important witnesses was granted and case adjourned. [page 4 column 1] [Note: T. B. THORPE was also mentioned as arriving in Winona on the noon stage from Russell Springs on Thursday, April 26, 1888, as reported in adjacent column "Serious Accident" that seriously injured C. A. BLACK, county treasurer, and minor injuries to Mr. THORPE. The bastardy case against T. B. THORPE comes up tomorrow before squire EDMONDSON. We are informed the case will again be continued for reasons best known to plaintiff. ________________ Source: The Winona CLIPPER, Winona, Logan County, Kansas; Thursday, May 10, 1888; Volume 1 No. 24, page 4 column 3. 'Squire EDMONDSON granted the plaintiff in the bastardy case against T. B. THORPE a continuance until June 17th. The defendant appeared and was ready for trial Friday but the condition of the plaintiff was such that she was unable to appear and the extension was granted in consequence. ________________ Source: The Winona CLIPPER, Winona, Logan County, Kansas; Thursday, May 17, 1888; Volume 1 No. 25, page 1 and 4.
