Stetter TimeTraveler303@aol.com August 17, 2007, 12:33 am The Oakley GRAPHIC, Oakley, Logan County, Kansas January 3, 1890 "MONUMENT" C. W. STICKNEY, Sam HARPER and J. S. HAMILTON superintended the butchering of three very fine porkers at the GROVE homestead Tuesday. Some miscreants stole DRURY's restaurant sign Christmas and nailed it on W. B. DICKEY's blacksmith shop and Will says he lost $5 worth of trade through its absence. Geo. MALOTT and family, Sam HARPER and family, Uncle Charley BRADLEY and family and Mr. CARNAHAN and family took dinner Christmas with A. J. ALLEN and wife. C. E. HARWOOD went to Topeka Christmas on a trade. He reports having traded his store room here for a dwelling there and expects to take up his abode in his new home about Feb. 1. Dan MODEN, of Page, was in town Saturday. He reports having chased his hat ten miles, so thought it best to buy a cap. After getting prices, however, he concluded there were none in town large enough for him. Will GERMAN obstructed the railroad last Friday with a load of hay. It was caused by the breaking of the reach of his wagon, but through the timely assistance of your scribe and others he was relieved of his critical situation. Will DRURY has become such a chronic tobacco beggar that all chewers of the weed who frequently meet him have a supply of strongly peppered tobacco for the accommodation of Will. Cayenne pepper is having the desired effect, as one of our merchants was heard to say that something was going to happen, as DRURY had bought a nickel's worth of tobacco. George HOPES, who lives in the southwest part of Monument township, made a business call at the residence of his neighbor, Jacob BOSCH, who lives on the northeast of section 4, 12 34. Judging from the gashes in George's scalp and version he gave of their coming together, he got rather more business than was good for his health. -- CROSS CUT Additional Comments: Source: The Oakley GRAPHIC, Oakley, Logan County, Kansas; Friday, January 3, 1890, Volume 1 Number 7.
