Stetter Timetraveler303@aol.com November 18, 2007, 11:13 am The Oakley Graphic The Oakley GRAPHIC, Oakley, Logan County, Kansas 11 May 1961 Obituary Herbert Lee Allen Herbert Lee ALLEN son of James F. and Kittlie ALLEN was born at Rothville, Mo., October 7, 1878. He was united in marriage with Eunice E. THOMPSON at Laclede, Mo. on June 4, 1911, where they made their home and operated a general store. Two children, Doris E. (Mrs. Edwin P. KNAPP) of Denver, Colo. and James M. of Cottowood, Calif. were born to this union. The family, with J. Paul and Agnes JONES (sister of Eunice) moved to Logan County, Kansas in 1918 engaging in ranching and to Winona, Kansas in 1926 where they engaged in hardware, implement and undertaking business. In 1937 they moved to Garden City, Kansas to re-enter ranching with J. Paul JONES. Garden City was their home until the death of Eunice in 1955, since which time he has made his home with Doris. Herb as he was well known in Western Kansas was active in civic affairs serving as Mayor of Winona, Kansas and County Clerk of Logan County. He was active in the Methodist Church and devoted much time to the interests of young people. He was a member of the Garden City Methodist church at the time of his death. He devoted several years to the Finney County Free Fair grounds which was a work of love in his latter life. Herb was respected by all who knew him and loved by all the young folks. He was called to his final reward while visiting the J. Paul and Agnes JONES home in Long Beach, Calif., May 3, 1961 at the age of 82 years and seven months. He is survived by Doris KNAPP and James M.
