Stetter TimeTraveler303@aol.com February 14, 2008, 11:54 pm The Oakley GRAPHIC, Oakley, Logan County, Kansas; August 13, 1891 OBITUARY. John Lester, son of Mr. and Mrs. John WAGGONER, died August 11, 1891, aged 15 years, 8 months and 15 days. The remains were taken to the Oakley cemetery, where a short service was conducted by Rev. SHACKLEFORD, of Colby. The angel of Death has again come into our midst and taken a beloved one home. Lester was a kind, loving and affectionate son and brother. He had a kind work and a smile for all who knew him. Although he had never made a profession of religion we have full evidence of his faith in Jesus by his words to his father a few days before he died. He said that he had not sinned very much, he didn't think, and he forgave everyone, and he thought that God would forgive him. Sunday morning he called his father to him and said: "Why are there so many people around, Pa, am I dying?" His father replied: "No, this is Sabbath morning and they have come to see my boy." The boy replied: "Oh yes, that's all right." Little Lester was not afraid to die. He said he was ready to go when Jesus called. If it was Jesus' will he was not afraid to go. Home, to him, was the dearest place on earth and he seemed never to care for other scenes of enjoyment. Conscious and bright till the very last, he seemed to realize that the hour of release had come, as he said, "I am willing to go if it be Jesus' will." Suddenly peace fell upon his soul and his short life was over without a struggle. "I am willing to go if it be Jesus' will," Sweetly, peacefully spoke he the words, As though trusting, already knowing, One his prayers had often heard. "I am willing to go if it be Jesus' will," To the Home land, which is Heaven; Every day a love taken sowing, Until perfected fifteen and fifteen. Faded like the pure white lily When the chill frosts touched its heart, And we'll miss you Lester darling, And the tears, unbidden start. When we talk of you so fondly, Think of you so kind and true, Always gentle, always patient, Bearing all, as angels do. We'll miss you in the evening, When the lamp casts its soft glow, As we list, to you and To your voices, sweet and low. But we know there'll be a dawning And the clouds will roll away, And we'll meet you, Lester darling, On the morn of that bright day. __________ CARD OF THANKS. Mr. and Mrs. John WAGGONER wish to thank our people for the kindness which was so general and spontaneous. In a voice husky with emotion Mr. WAGGONER said to the writer: "We feel that the people here have done everything that friends could do." _______________ Source: The Oakley GRAPHIC, Oakley, Logan County, Kansas; Thursday, August 13, 1891; Volume II No. 39, Page 4 columns 6.
