"Edna Christina Padgett, 92, a life-long resident of Florence passed away Thursday, January 21, 1999, at Marion Manor Nursing Home, Marion, where she resided the past 11 months. She was born April 25, 1906, at Florence to John C. and Phebe (Lofgren) Padgett. Edna was baptized in 1920 at the Florence Christian Church. She graduated from Florence Memorial High School with the class of 1924 and Kansas State Teacher's College, Emporia. She taught in the Florence Elementary School system for 43 years and was active in the Christian Women's Fellowship. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Retired Teacher's Association. Upon her retirement from teaching, she traveled to all 50 states and throughout Europe. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and writing poetry. She was preceded in death by her parents. She was the last of eight children - - - three died in infancy; brother, Curtis; sisters, Harriette Padgett, Grace Selvy and Azalia Burkett; three nephews, Ralph Burkett, Jr., Carol Selvy and Roy Selvy. She is survived by her sister-in-law; Elizabeth Padgett; 14 nieces and nephews; host of friends and past students. Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 25, 1999, at the Florence Chistrian Church with Rev. Larry Timm officiating. Dolly Soyez, organist accompanied Grace Selvy Sebert, niece, of Grandview, MO who sang "Hold My Hand, Presious Lord." Edna Mae Padgett Malmgren, niece, of Overland Park read a poem about the life of her aunt entitled, "Auntie's 'Ple Sunbonnet." The congration sang "O, That will Be Glory For Me and "It Is Well With My Soul". Honorary pallbearers were nephews, Edward Padgett Burkett, Sunnydale, CA; John Cavin Padgett, Florence and William Sherman Padgett, Silver Springs, MD. Casket bearers were great-nephews Mark Henry, Dennis London and Roger London, Wichita; Robert Jewell, Olathe; Wayne Ireland, Topeka and Jim Padgett, Florence. She was laid to rest in the family plot at Hillcrest Cemetery north of Florence. A Memorial has been established with Florence Christian Church in care of Zeiner Funeral Home in Marion who made all the funeral arrangements. ATTENDING THE FUNERAL: "Many Attend Padgett Funeral" (From the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin dated February 4, 1999) Relatives attending the funeral of Mrs.(sic.) Edna Padgett were: Enos Frey, Vera and Woody London, Dennis and Vicki London, Roger London, Gaila and Bill Henry, Mark Henry, Gala Braum, Maryls Morrison, and Tari Malmgren, all of Wichita.
