(Note: The obituary uses the spelling of Fox for all but the sketch read at his funeral, which contains the correct spelling of Focks. GBG 4.27.2000) The obituary: "Death of Fred Fox" "Sunday morning the people of Waterville were surprised to learn of the death at 2:30 that morning of Fred Fox, a well known farmer living a mile or so northeast of town. While it had been known that he was sick, very few seemed to have known that he was in so serious condition, and news of his death was a surprise to all. "His illness commenced after returning last fall from Kansas City, where he and his wife had been visiting his daughter. His health gradually failed until the end came on Sunday morning. "The funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the Lutheran Church, Rev. J.C. Ferster preaching the sermon. "Owing to the delay in the arrival of a daughter, Mrs. Hall, the services in the church, which were to have been held at 2:30 o'clock, did not start until about 4, when it was learned that the train from the east would not arrive until after 7 o'clock. The remains were left in the church until the arrival of the train, and after the daughter had viewed them they were conveyed to Riverside Cemetery and deposited in the grave. "The night was a disagreeable one, quite a heavy rain falling during the evening, but some fifty or more persons were at the cemetery, where by the light of lanterns the burial service of the Oddfellows was gone through with, the deceased having been a member of the order over thirty-one years. "Fred Fox was a good citizen, well liked by all, and his death will be regretted by many. The bereaved wife and children will have the sympathy of all friends in their sorrow. The following sketch of his life was read at the service in the church: Michael Frederick Focks was born at Barth, Germany, January 5, 1850, and died at his home near Waterville, Kans., May 23, 1915, aged 65 years, 4 months and 18 days. He came to America in the fall of 1868, locating at Milwaukee, Wisc. After two years' residence in that city he went to Holly Springs, Miss., and after traveling around during one summer he came to Kansas in 1871, and while he went back to Chicago for one year, he returned to Kansas and settled in Waterville township, where he has since resided, On December 28, 1876, he was married to Miss Mary Schroeder and to this union were born nine children, five sons and four daughters, eight of whom are living, one son having died. "The surviving children are: Mrs. Amelia Hall, of Bedrock, Oklahoma; Mrs. Minnie Mills, of Kansas City, Mo.; Mr. Fred A. Focks, of Crane, Mo., Mrs. Hulda Dwyer, of Kansas City, Mo.; and Henry, Rudolph, Albert and Mrs. Bertha Arnold at home. "These and his wife and eight grand-children remain to mourn his death. He was raised in the Lutheran faith and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Germany. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. order for over thirty-one years and of the A.O.U.W. for more than twenty-seven years. He was a kind husband and father, and was always interested in the welfare of his children, and in the community in which he lived, he was interested in the schools and in advancing the cause of education. He will be greatly missed in the home and by all who knew him."
