Paul The sad news of the death of Wm. Paul, at his residence in this township, reached this city on Tuesday morning. Mr. Paul located in this county in May, 1859, served his country in a Kansas regiment during the war, since which he has resided upon his farm in our midst, and has been known as a good citizen, and upright and honest man. He was one of the charter members of Rob't Hale Post, and its first Senior-Vice Commander. For a year or two past he had been afflicted with a cancer on his lip, which finally spread to his throat, and for six months past he was confined to his bed -- a patient sufferer -- at last released by death. He was a member of the M. E. church, and on Tuesday afternoon the funeral services were held at the church in this city, Rev. W. N. McHarg preaching the sermon, by request of the deceased. Mr. McHarg being an old friend and acquaintance. He was assisted by the pastor and Rev. Mr. Wilson, Chaplain of the 5th Dist. G. A. R. Rob't Hale Post and a large number of friends were present. The family have the sympathy of many friends. Additional Comments: Note: Above clipping is in the Civil War widow's pension application file. William Paul and Eliza A. Walker were married June 30, 1853, in Port Byron, Illinois. S. F. Paul (age 52) and Sadie L. Wanamaker (aged 49), both of Blue Rapids, Kansas, signed an affidavit in 1908: "We, the two witnesses, are the son and daughter, respectively, of the said Eliza A. Paul." On January 29, 1894, S. Frank Paul (aged 37, of Blue Rapids) signed an affidavit as the administrator of the estate of the late William Paul. Eliza A. Paul was dropped as a pensioner due to death on Sept. 5, 1928.
