WILMA CONRAD        DIES TODAY                 ~~~~~~ Services Sunday for Widow of Former Official                   ~~~~~~~     Wilma Flora Conrad, 80, widow of late H W Conrad, prominent early day political leader of the county and former Independence postmaster, passed away this morning at 2:45 after having been seriously ill for four months after having suffered a paralytic stroke.       Funeral service will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Potts Funeral chapel with Rev R G Penick of the First Methodist church in charge. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery.         Wilma Flora was born in Harisville [sic, Hartsville], Indiana, October 24, 1856 [sic, 1857] the daughter of Mr and Mrs Volney Flora, In 1875 she was united in marriage to H W Conrad in Liberty, Kansas. While living in that vicinity, Mr Conrad was elected to the state senate and after having served his term was elected county clerk. It was at this time the Conrads moved to Independence. Mr Conrad later served as a Kansas state representative and postmaster of Independence. He passed away eight years ago.       Surviving relatives are three daughters, Mrs Opal White, Mrs Walter Salathiel and Mrs Maude Hamilton, all of this city, and one sister Mrs Margaret Healy of Long Island [sic, Beach], California. Four grandchildren also survive.       The first Montgomery county seat, Verdigris City, which was located east of the river and one mile southeast of Brown's Ford was laid out on the farm owned by the Conrads.       Mrs Conrad's death means the passing of another of the county's early day mothers and leader. Mrs Conrad had lived in Independence for over 50 years and at her advanced age still was a great believer in her home town. She was a mother who had served her family and community well and her death is a great loss.       Pallbearers will be, Frank Harper, Emmett McGuire, E L Wolverton, Carl White, N L Harnes and R L Snow.           ----------<>---------- Courtesy of Maryann Johnson, Kansas Room, Independence Public Library. Also note:       Wihlelmina (Wilma) Isador (Flora) Conrad, d/o Volney Pulaski Flora and Eleanor Hollingsworth, came to Breckenridge County Kansas with parents and grandparents, fall 1860, to Liberty Township, Montgomery County after 1870 census, before 1875 state census. Her uncles, Daniel Rice Boon and John Andrew FLORA were neighbors of J Hendrix and Henry W Conrad in 1870 census.
