Briefly told, old Mr. J. L. Strauss is dead, and Will Reed, staying at the house and Mrs. Phineas Malcolm who went in to help care for the sick were both very near death, but saved by the skill of Drs. Blank and Wright. The old gentleman had several attacks of vomiting, extending over three days before he died, and the others one or two attacks before they began to suspicion, and all of the family or guests who drank the coffee, suffered more or less from poisoning. An examination found the coffee pot bright and clean, but on the pantry shelves was a box of rough on rats, and some of it was scattered on the shelves, and it is possible some of it got into the coffee "accidentally." Some "head cheese" is also under suspicion and part of it has been sent away for analysis. Parts of three families were poisoned, one person is dead, and that ought to be enough to warn every family to keep poisons of every class in an out of the way place, by itself, so as to prevent accidents. Additional Comments: James L. Strouss was buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Elk City, Montgomery County, Kansas.
