Lavey received the sad news Thursday evening, October 1st, that his son, Patrick C. Lavey, was dead at Portland, Oregon. Rumor has it that he took his own life, but no particulars have reached this city. Muskogee Daily Phoenix and Times-Democrat Sat Oct 17, 1908 pg 3 PAT LAVEY DENIES HE IS CORPSE WRITES LETTER FROM FRISCO TO CAPT REEVES TELLING CAUSE OF SUICIDE STORY Recently a report was circulated to the effect that Pat Lavey, a former resident of Muskogee, had committed suicide in the west. The rumor spread to San Francisco where it reached the ears of Mr. Lavey himself and since he is feeling very much alive he hastened to indite a protest to his friend, Captain Ira L. Reeves of Muskogee, in which he declares in the memorable language of Mark Twain that the "report o his death is greatly exaggerated." Mr. Laavey's protest against his earthly career having been shortened unknown to the party most interested is as follows: "San Francisco, Calif., Oct. 12 "Dear Captain: It is true that I left my hotel in Seattle, Wash., and that I was suffering with a bad arm at the time but I was drinking nothing stronger than water because the surgeon had for- bidden any drinking. Besides I have not taken a drink of whiskey since I left Muskogee and don't ever intend to take a drink again. "I left the hotel early in the evening instead of at 2 a.m. From the hotel I went to the home of my physician and from there down town where I met an old friend who was on his way to Mexico for what he said was to be a two weeks trip. He insisted on my accompanying him. The steamer for San Francisco and Los Angeles was due to leqave port in less than thirty minutes so I called a messenger boy and sent word to the hotel people to store my stuff until my return. The message was never delivered, hence the report of my death. "From the wharf I tried to get the hotel by phone and failed and as I had to rush I went on. We came by boat to Los Angeles and went from there by rail to Mexico. I was having a nice time and thought everything was all right and had no means of knowing otherwise till I returned to San Francisco where I found my mail and newspapers containing the report. "It is true that I have been troubled over financial matters since the panic knocked me out fair and square but while there's life there's hope and you know that I can pull out with half a chance. You also know that I would never commit suicide. Whenever I did I want to do so in dear old Muskogee, the best town on earth. "By the way the trip was profitable as I have gotten hold of a piece of property near the stake of my friend that promises to be a gold producer. I am finishing my negotiations with officials of the Mexican government for full purchase of same and am starting back Wednesday of this week. When I get things arranged in Mexico I will start back for home a very lively corpse. Will be back in Muskogee within thirty days.
