Joe BENORTHAM, well-known Scranton miner was killed sometime Sunday morning when the roof of a small section of the Labor Exchange Coal Mine collapsed and fell on him as he worked alone in the mine. It is probable that he did not live for long after the cave in if death was not instant. About a ton of rock and dirt fell on him crushing his head and arm. He had gone to the mine Sunday morning, according to reports. He was found in the afternoon about four o'clock when Wm. ROWE went to the mine to look for him after Mrs. Benortham became worried when he did not come home for dinner. Both Rowe and Benortham worked at the Labor Exchange. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon. A large number of miners attended. Joseph William BENORTHAM was born in Lisbcord, Cornwall, England, July 14, 1878, and departed this life in Scranton, Kansas, December 9, 1934, at the age of 60 years, 4 months and ? days. On March 24, 1898, he was united in marriage to Miss Augusta BROWNING, in Bristol, England and came to Scranton, Kansas in 1900 and has lived here continuously until his death. His death was caused by a fall of dirt while working at the Labor Exchange coal mine. He has been a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for 30 years. He leaves his widow, one daughter, two sons and four grandchildren. The children are Mrs. H.R. GOODYEAR, of Topeka; Louis Benortham of Burlingame and Fred Benortham of Tpoeka; also two sisters living in England. Card of Thanks.
