It is not known how the fire started, as it was burning fiercely when first noticed by the station agent. Alexander Connor, the man who was burned to death, was about 81 years of age and one of the pioneers of this country, having been the first city marshall of the town, more than thirty years ago. The station agent who was the first to arrive on the scene of the fire, kicked the door in but not knowing that the house was occupied, made no effort to awaken the occupant. There are several singular features about the fire. Earlier in the evening a stranger was seen hanging about the place and he has not been seen since the fire. Dr. Conner the county coroner, will hold an inquest some time today. Additional Comments: The Scranton Gazette Fri Feb 28, 1902 pg 1 Alex Connors had an interest in a runaway Wednesday. His horse, attached to a spring wagon, took leave of the location in the east part of town where it was supposed to stand tied and rushed to Brownie avenue. Some one stopped it there, and the anger felt at being refused the privilege of establishing a record became manifest when the horse proceeded leisurely to kick the vehicle to pieces. Bystanders looked on powerless to interrupt, while the animal shivered everything within its reach. Gibson were tried before Justice Morris Wednesday for disturbing the peace of Mrs. Ralph. T. R. Hayson of Burlingame was present in behalf of the defendants, who were acquitted. Sheldon store was found broken Wednesday morning and on investigation 7 sacks of flour were found missing. The thieves were easily traced by flour scattered along the route they took and the flour was found in Alex Connor's coal house. Martin Luby, Frank McGhiey and Alex Connors were charged with the theft and taken to Burlingame for trial Wednesday after- noon by sheriff Hoover and Deputy Thurman. Young and Alexander Connors. The race was run on Brownie avenue for a purse of fifty cents and was won by mr. Young in all the time he wanted, Mr. Connors having dropped his supply of "puff" early in the contest.
