PALMER was born near Springfield, Ill., August 8, 1840 and was married to George COWEN, Dec. 4, 1866. They moved to Kansas in the spring of 1867, settling on a farm four miles south of what is now Scranton, then only a broad expanse of unsettled territory. At this home Mrs. Cowen lived continuously 67 years. To George and Sarah Cowen six children were born, Ida, Eva, John, Orval Henry and Orin V. Cowen who died in 1875, at age one and one-half years. Thirty years later her husband died, in 1904. After thirty years widowhood, Mrs. S.A. Cowen died April 18, 1934, lacking only 4 months of 94 years of age. Her parents, five brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn their loss: T.R. Palmer, Jacksnville, Ill.; M.S. Palmer, Virden, Ill.; sister, Carrie NICOLAY, Lyndon, Kansas; 3 sons, two daughters, 18 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild died in infancy. Mrs. Cowen was reared in a Christian home, was converted in early childhood. She joined the Methodist Episcopal chruch at fourteen years of age and until her death, was devoted to church and Christian enterprises.
