Lavey to his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Peter McFarlane, advising them as to the cause of Tom Lavey's death in the Philippines: LANSING, KANSAS, April 4, '01 DEAR UNCLE AND AUNT:--Yours of recent date came to hand a few days ago. I regret to state that I received a letter from the War Department, Washington, D. C., substantiating the report of Tom's death in the Philippines. He was gored to death by an animal known as a cariboo, on March 6. It is indeed sad to think he should meet such a fater after passing through the campaign without a scratch. But we must bow to the will of him who rules all things. The thought that he died such a violent death so far away from home and friends is painful indeed. My prayer is that God will send the rest home to us sound and well. I scan every paper in dread of seeing anything wrong about the rest of our boys, for I feel that it would break your hearts to have any harm befall John or Tom. I hope and trust they are well and that they will return home to be with you in the near future. With best wishes for your own health and prosperity, I have the pleasure to remain your devoted nephew, PAT LAVEY The Osage County Chronicle Mon Mar 31, 1902 pg 3 How Tom Lavey Died The presence of Will Lavey here the past week, calls to our mind the fact that of the three brothers who were in the Spanish war but two returned home; and the further fackk that the particuolars of exactly how Tom Lavey met death had never been published. Of the three broters who served Tom was the oldest, he enlisted in the volunteers at the first call when the war broke out. He was in the 22nd Kansas but saw no service exept that of tackling army rations for six months at Chicamauga. On being mustered out he enlisted in the regular army and saw service in the Philipines. He was in about fifteen battles and skirmishes and had come out of them without injury. The description of his death is given in the following in a letter written by a sergeant of his company to his brother Will. It reads as follows: 'He was on a march between Domalaz and Topaz and the column met two Carabaos (or water buffalos) in a very narrow cut. The carabaos charged and Lavey had no time to get out of the way. One of the carabaos horms struck him in the left groin and came out under the right breast. He was thrown in the air and his knee ap broken when he fell. The carabaos were killed and he was brought into Dumalag that night and to Dao the next day. He did not suffer much and was cheerful to the end and death came very suddenly. When he arrived in Dao his wounds were dressed. He refused chloroform while they were dressing the wounds, saying 'he guessed he could stand it'. Just as they were getting ready to transfer him from the dressing table to bed he got weaker and in five minutes he was dead. He was brought here yesterday and buried in this town in cement vault No. 3. The Lieutenant will write to your father as soon as he comes in, he is on a march now. "Accept the sympathy of myself and all knew him, whe was a good soldier and well liked and respected in the company--We all liked Lavey."
