William Henry STEPHENS was born at Callington Cornwall, England, April 1, 1843
and departed this life January 8, 1928, at the age of 84 years 9 months and 7 days.
He moved to Northumberland England where he united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth
RUTTER, on the 22nd day of January 1867. To this union eight children were born,
four of which preceded the father in death.
All the children except John, the youngest were born in England.
He and his family lived in Northumberland England until 1881 when they came to
this country, and lived for one year near Carbondale, Kansas then he bought the
farm near Scranton where he has made his home the remainder of his life.
In addition to his farm work he was a miner until 1909.
His wife preceeded him in death on March 1910.
He has been in poor health for many months, was a patient sufferer and was
willing to go, praying that death might come and end his pain and suffering.
He has been a honest, hardworking man, and will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary DUANCE, of Callington, Cornwall,
England; and four children, Mrs. Mary STANGE, of Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs.
Elizabeth ROWE, of Scranton, Kansas; Mrs. Amelia HULSOPPLE, of Scranton, Kansas;
and Mr. John STEPHENS of Scranton, Kansas; 16 grandchildren; and 8 great
grandchildren and numerous friends.
Funeral services were held at the M.E. church Tuesday at 2 p.m. January 10
conducted by Rev. H.P. Basquin. 
Interment was made in Scranton Cemetery.
