Long Time Resident Came Here In 1888. Former Editor Of Scranton Gazette. Scranton lost one of its valuable and long time residents and former business women when Mrs. Sarah Conklin WAKEMAN died October 28, 1933. Coming to Scranton in 1888, Mrs. Wakeman was engaged in the Mercantile business and for ten years was publisher of the Scranton Gazette. Mrs. Wakeman was born at Sidney, New York, May 15, 1844, daughter of Charles and Katherine CONKLIN. On November 3, 1869 she married Judson A. Wakeman of her native town. Mr. and Mrs. Wakeman moved to Smith Center, Kansas, in 1872; laster moving to Severy and Howard engaging in the mercantile business in both towns. In 1888 they came to Scranton where she has been a resident until her recent death. Mrs. Wakeman was a member of the Methodist Church from the time she was twelve years old. She was affliated with the Rebekah and Pocahontas lodges. She had been matron of the Yoinex, Oregon, Indian School; at Whitecloud, Kansas Indian School and at Beloit school for girls in addition to her other business enterprises. She is survived by two children, Don C. Wakeman of Scranton and Mrs. Lynn GLOVEN of Washington, D.C.; her husband having died in 1901, and another child, Verne Wakeman at an earlier date. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock in the Methodist church in charge of Rev. J.R. Williams. Burial in Scranton Cemetery. Card of Thanks.
