Connor was born in Burlingame, Kansas, and grew up in that state where he obtained his education in the common schools. He came to this part in 1911, and has lived here since then. He is a coal miner, and has followed that work for years. Since the death of his father, four years ago, he has been the head of household at their cottage home in Dewar. Hugh was check weighman for a period of three years, and was a company man for some time. More lately he has given up such position and is now "digging" as he explained, "in order to make a livng." There are two younger boys of the family, but they are both in the national army. Of these, James was not quite twenty-one, but volunteered for service, and is now in France. Patrick was confined to a hospital in Fort Smith for some months, but immediately on his return home, he went to Fort Riley, Kansas and enlisted for service. Thus Hugh is the mainstay of the house- hold. Hugh Connor has been identified with all organized labor affairs for some time past, and represented his brethen in the recent convention in Kansas City, where the big discussion was up, over the "penalty clause." This ambitious young man is now a candidate on the Democratic ticket for nomination as county treasurer. His fitness for the work is unquestioned. Henryetta Free-Lance. Additional Comments: The Henryetta Standard Thur Jul 18, 1918 pg 3 We notice the name of Hugh Connor among the last list of drafted men and this will probably eliminate Mr. Connor from the political race for the county treasurership. It is reported that Hugh has said that his first duty is to his country and that he will accompany the other boys to the training camp the last of next week. Arkansas Gazette Tues May 7, 1935 pg 2 FORT SMITH CHIEF OF POLICE OUSTED Hugh G Connor to Be Succeeded by Mike Gordon, Veteran Officer. Fort Smith, Ark. May 6 (AP)-Declaring "conditions during the adminstration and for several years prior have not been what they should have been," Mayor J. K. Jordan announced today dismissal of Hugh J. Connor as chief of poice and appointment of Mike Gordon, township constable, to succeed Connor. The action was taken in an effort to achieve better enforcement of laws in Fort Smith, the mayor said. Gordon was appointed with instructions to "make every effort to stop the continued violation and disrespect of the law," Mayor Jordan said. The move, which becomes effective tomorrow, was described as in harmony with wished of members of the Civil Service Commission. Gordon, a veteran police officer and a former Fort Smith chief of police, said he plans to draft strict rules for the department. "There will be no drinking; there will be no attending picture shows while on duty, and every man will be expected to remain on his beat." Gordon said. Connor was appointed chief of police in 1926 and was reappointed in 1933. He declined to make a statement. 1940 Fort Smith, Sebastian, Arkansas John Limberg 61 AR Mary Limberg 62 Germany Bertha Connor 37 AR daughter widow Hugh J Connor 4 AR grandson Arkansas Death Index, 1914-1950 Name: Hugh Connor Event Type: Death Event Date: 15 Apr 1936 Event Place: Pulaski, Arkansas Page Number: 706 Affiliate Film Number: 19341940 Arkansas Marriage Index, 1933-1939 Name: Bertha M Limberg Event Type: Intended Marriage Event Date: 28 Oct 1933 Event Place: Sebastian, Arkansas Gender: Female Spouse's Name: Hugh J Connor Certificate Number: 24656 Volume Number: 124 Affiliate Film Number: 0001 U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 Jun 5, 1917 Name: Hugh John Connor Marital status: Single Birth Date: 20 Jan 1889 Birth Place: Burlingame, Osage, Kansas Residence Place: Dewar, Okmulgee, Oklahoma Occupation: Coal Miner - Consolidated Coal Co. 1930 Ft.
