But he was there today, his first as police magistrate. His first morning wasa fairly busy one. Robert Lowry, colored, was accused by his uncle, Andrew Lowry, of disturbing the peace, and was expected to come into court later and plead guilty. This meant that the new magistrate's first case would not be one requiring the taking of evidence, the citing of laws, and other points of trial procedure, but that the new magistrate would merely accept the plea of the guilty and mete out justice according to the magnitued of the distrubance. The new magistrate was asked many questions, including one from a man who wanted a warrant that was taken out against his son three years ago. He probably feared so long as there was no action on the warrant his son was in danger of prosecution. The new magistrate said he would look it up. But he found time to receive congratulations from friends who dropped in to see how he looked behind the police court desk. The Police Court generally took on a new appearance, with Charles Halsey as the city attorney.
