On December 28, 1865, she married George W Roberts, who soon after their marriage moved to Iowa. She was left a widow with four children, three boys and one girl. On January 30, 1879, in Harden county, Iowa, she was married to George Thomas; four children, two boys and two girls blessed this union. All the children are alive and live in Phillips county, Kansas. On March 1, 1879, George Thomas and his family settled on a claim 10 miles west of Phillipsburg. About two years ago the family moved to Phillipsburg. Last October Mrs Thomas was taken sick, from which she never recovered, and on June 2, 1900, at 7:30 she passed over the river of death to her reward. All her life she has been a hard-working woman. During the war she was one of the girls who was at home and worked the farm while her father and brothers went to the war. Mrs Thomas was a kind neighbor and always had many friends; a loving wife and a kind mother. During her sickness she remarked to her husband, "Why don't you let me go?" Although she never united with any church, she believed in God and the Bible and seems to have made her peace with God before she died and is now in the hands of a just God who doeth all things. Her favorite hymns were "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me." The funeral services were conducted in the Methodist church by Rev. W K Loofbourrow whose text was, Lamentations III-24: "The Lord is my Portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him." CARD OF THANKS I desire to express my sincere gratitude to the many kind friends and neighbors for their timely assistance during my wife's sickness and funeral. George Thomas MY NOTES There is no date, name of paper or location on this obituary or on the card of thanks, however, they were undoubtedly from the Phillipsburg, Phillips Co, Ks newspaper. Emily was the d/o Gilbert N "Yankee" Smith and his wife Susan Benner. Her first husband, George Roberts, was a first cousin, his mother being Mary Ann Benner, sister of Susan. His father was Lorenzo Roberts. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with the USGenWeb policy of providing free information on the Internet, this data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
