He was elected County Treasurer of Rice County in the fall of 1880 and re-elected in the fall of 1882. He has served as County Commissioner of Rice County for three years. He was born in Ray County, Mo., near Camden October 20, 1835; lived there until seventeen years old when he emigrated to Douglas County, Oregon, and farmed ten years. He dealt there in live stock from 1863 to 1869, thence went to Texas and engaged in the cattle business driving stock to Kansas and selling, etc., etc. He married in 1871 Miss Minerva Ogle, of Douglas County, Oregon. They have three children - Pearly, Laurel and Ira V. He was among the first permanent settlers of Rice County, having settled on his claim in November 1870.
