H. Bentley (1910) Christopher Gerhards, farmer, of Union township, Sedgwick county, Kansas, is a native of Germany, where he was born March 31, 1869. He is a son of Valentine Gerhards, also a native of Germany. Christopher Gerhards came to the United States on May 26, 1886, and first located at Lake Linden, Michigan, where he worked for a time in the copper mines. He left the copper mines to enter the employ of Armour & Co., of Chicago, and in 1901 came to Russell county, Kansas, where he bought land and farmed for a time. This land he afterwards sold and bought 240 acres in Section 4, Union township, and has since lived on the same. Mr. Gerhards was married in August, 1891, to Miss Susan Schaass, a native of Michigan. Seven children have been born of this union, of whom five are now living. The children are: Mary, born November 10, 1892; Matthew, born January 13, 1894; John, born August 11, 1895; Benjamin, born May 20, 1897; Mahannah, born March 18, 1900; Henry, deceased, born June 6,1906. Mr. Gerhards is the present trustee of Union township. He is a member of the Catholic church and is a Democrat in politics.
