Lived in Oklahoma until his move to Wichita in 1951. He proudly served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, where he was stationed in India. As the tail gunner on a B-24 Bomber, he flew many missions in the China-Burma-India Theater for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He went to work at O.A. Sutton Co., making Vornado fans and air conditioners. When the company closed, Herndon worked at various aircraft jobs, until he went to work for USD 259, retiring in 1986 as head custodian.
