The newly organized "Shade County," which is located south of Seward and Stevens County, Kansas, in the Neutral Strip, Ind. Territory, took its first legal action on the 23rd inst. The JOHNSONS and ELDRIDGES have been quarrelling for some time and young Johnson killed young Eldridge. The Sheriff arrested the heads of both families as well at the principal of the crime, and a trial by jury gave a verdict fineing each $75, and the confiscation of the firearms of both families and 90 days to get their affairs in shape to leave the country. As the government will not give the settlers of the Neutral Strip protection to life and property they are compelled to take action themselves. The county was named after Mr. J.U. SHADE, the popular live-stock agent of the Rock Island railroad at this point. Though proud of the honor thus conferred upon him, Mr. Shade is still as genial and good-natured as ever. ==== KS-FOOTSTEPS Mailing List ==== File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ks/seward/newspapers/articlej280nw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/ksfiles/ File size: 1.7 Kb
