Was Guard at Illinois State Penitentiary--He Was Killed By A Convict. On Duty At Time Of Death. Letter to Chas. W. Rogers Brings Information of Tragic Death of Man Who at One Time Was Chief of Police in Liberal. C.W. Rogers, secretary of the Liberal Odd Fellows lodge, is in receipt of a letter from O.T. McMurry of Normal, Illinois, in which it is stated that his brother, James O. McMURRY, had been killed by a convict at the Illinois State Penitentiary while in the discharge of his duties as a guard. No details of the murder are given. McMurray was at one time chief of police of Liberal, and was the only man who ever wore a policeman's uniform while on duty here, and he will be remembered by most Liberal people.
