Jarrard BANKS was born in Adams county, Illinois, March 25, 1835, died December 6, 1920. He was 85 years, 8 months, and 11 days old. He was married to Mary E. YOUNG at the age of 28 coming to Kansas in 1876 from Illinois and located on a claim near Wellington, Kansas, later moving on a claim near Caldwell, where his wife died. From there he went to Enid, Okla., where he lived 11 years and then he moved to McAlister, where he remained until his death. Before settling in Kansas he came to the state in '59 where he dug the first well on the site of Girard, a town named for him even though they misspelled his name. He was among the first to locate in Drummond, Okla., and he built the first building in that town. Mr. Banks served in the civil war with the 84th Illinois, Infantry. He is survived by three sons, and two daughters, Alma A. CROOK, Nellie LARSON, Albert A. BANKS, Andrew L. BANKS, of McAlister, Okla., and Willis S. BANKS, of Liberal, Kans. The body was taken to Caldwell, Kans., December 8th, to be buried where his wife and son were laid to rest. The funeral was attended by his son, Willis S. Banks of Liberal. They returned Wednesday.
