Bernece Fergeson, 100, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Restlawn Memorial Cemetery in
Liberal, Kan., with Gilbert Mires officiating. Arrangements are by Roberts
Brothers Funeral Home of Hooker, Okla.

Bernece Fergeson of Amarillo was taken by the Good Lord away from us on Nov. 30,
2005, at the age of 100 years in Amarillo.

Bernece Mercedes Fergeson was born in Arapaho, Oklahoma Territory, on March 6,
1905, to the union of John Houston and Nettie Jacobs Houston. She traveled to
the Oklahoma Panhandle (No Man's Land) by covered wagon when she was 5 days old
from Clinton, Okla., which took a few weeks. Bernece celebrated her 100th
birthday on Saturday, March 5, 2005, with her family and friends in Amarillo
with a dinner and get-together.

She grew up on the farm her father homesteaded in 1903. She attended the
Appleton grade school and graduated from Tyrone High School in Tyrone, Okla. She
saw her share of dust storms and hard times during the Depression years. In the
late '30s she attended college at Goodwell, Okla., getting her teacher's
certificate, which allowed her to teach school and pursue her degree. She taught
her first four years in one-room school houses which had from first to eighth
grades, and sometimes the school houses doubled for church on Sundays.
Altogether, she taught school nearly 30 years.

She saw many changes in our world: automobiles, radios, telephones, airplanes,
electricity, television, cell phones and computers, which was hard for her to
understand how we can get images and words on screens over telephone wires.

She loved to crochet and do all kinds of arts and crafts. She oil painted and
worked in ceramics, some of these in her 80s. In the last few years she was
unable to work with her hands due to arthritis. Her children and grandchildren
have many things she has given to them over the years, which they very much
treasure. She also never forgot her many friends who were receivers of gifts
from her hands. She loved to play bingo in Hooker on Saturday nights and went to
Senior Citizens (which she was instrumental in starting) faithfully in Guymon,
Okla., three or five times a week when she lived in Adams, Okla. Adams was her
home for about 40 years. She moved to Amarillo in her early 90s to live with her
daughter, Yvonne Sober.

She still liked to read Western books in large print from the library and also
enjoyed television. She was able to walk and get her exercise every day, when
the weather was nice; she walked outside on the driveway. All of her family was
very proud of her.

Bernece was a Christian and a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Adams.
She was a devoted mother, very caring and giving, and a friend to all she met.
She loved everyone. She always said she would live to be 103 years old.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Nettie Houston; three
husbands, Clarence Chuesberg, Ernest Davis and Felix Fergeson; a brother,
Orville Houston; and two granddaughters, Sherry Chuesberg and Theresa Brittain
Blakely.

Survivors include two daughters, Yvonne Sober and husband, Jack, of Amarillo and
Ernestine Brittain of Talequah, Okla.; a son, Leon Chuesberg and wife, JoAnn, of
Adams; nine grandchildren, Jerry and Linda Sober, Vickie and Jim Putman, Dawna
and Mike Poole, Tracie West, Jamie and Breck Draper, Gary Chuesberg, Mary Jo and
Dean Foster, Timmy Brittain and wife and Danny Brittain and wife; 27
great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and other friends and relatives.

The family suggests memorials be to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, in care of Roberts
Brothers Funeral Home, P.O. Box 745, Hooker, OK 73945.
