More Than 600,000 Victim in U.S., Last Year. More than 600,000 deaths from influenza and pneumonia were recorded last year, according to the experience table recently issued by the Metropolitan Insurance company. This figure is appalling when it is remembered that 600,000 persons is almost equal to twenty full army divisions. America's loss in the war was less than 80,000 or a little bit more than two divisions--almost two and two-thirds division to be exact. Another interesting feature of the report is the showing of the increase in other diseases directly traceable to the flu epidemics. The women suffered heaviest in the result. Diseases associated with childbirth increased a full 200 per cent during the last year. Heart disease increased 21 per cent and tuberculosis increased 16 per cent. In the state of Kansas the Metropolitan company paid death claims on account of the ful and pneumonia in the sum of $125,116, this sum being represented by 717 policies. In the United States and Canada the company 120,204 claims for a total of amount of $27, 604,475. Of the total number of claims the company gives the actual number of deaths from flu and pneumonia as 83, 517. The company states in its bulletin that this number of deaths was approximately 68,000 in excess of the number to be expected under normal conditions.
