Topeka Sees Its First Laundry Strike Today. Eighteen Workers at Mutual Plant Leave Place. Insist on Joining Unions. Demanded That Manager Hire New Girls on Plan. Police Called to Perserved Order This Afternoon. Eighteen girls, employed at the Mutual laundry, Third and Quincy streets, walked out this afternoon following demands made by them to C.H. MATTHEWS, manager. According to Matthews the girls appeared before him in a delegation and demanded that whenever he hired a new girl in the laundry that she be obliged to sign a statement saying she would willingly join the union. Matthews stated that he has not yet turned down the girls' demands. He has the matter under consideration, he says, and in the meantime the girls are on a strike. When the girls notified Matthews they were going to walk out, the manager called the police station and asked for a man to perserve order. ==== KS-FOOTSTEPS Mailing List ==== File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ks/shawnee/newspapers/girlswal27gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ksfiles/ File size: 1.6 Kb
