Mrs. James Brewer Came to Topeka in 1858. Mrs. James BREWER, one of the pioneer settlers of Topeka, died at her home, 1027 Western avenue, yesterday afternoon. The immediate cause of her death was pneumonia, altho she had been in failing health for some time. Mrs. Brewer is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Arthur LINGAFELT, of Oklahoma City, who with Mr. Lingafelt, had been at her bedside for several days. Two sons, L. G. Brewer and W.H. Brewer, who now live in California, are on their way to Topeka, called by their mother's death. Mrs. Brewer was a native of Indiana, but had made her home in Kansas since 1854. She came to Topeka in 1858, soon after her marriage and settled on a farm homestead upon which original tract is located the house in which she died. Mrs. Brewer was fond of telling her children of the aspect of Topeka when first she saw it. At that time there was but one tree between the river and her home, at what is now the intersection of Western avenue and King street. So impressed was she with the need of shade that she planted with her own hands nearl half the trees which now beautify the neighborhood of her home. Mrs. Brewer's husband, likewise one of the pioneer settlers of Topeka, died in 1913. ==== KS-FOOTSTEPS Mailing List ==== File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ks/shawnee/obits/b/brewer389gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ksfiles/ File size: 1.9 Kb
