CLAUSSEN - Topeka Kansas - 1988 The Topeka Capital-Journal, Saturday, December 17, 1988 p.9c (picture accompanies this obituary) Lawyer, former county auditor dead at age 81 Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home for Arthur L. CLAUSSEN, 81, a retired Topeka lawyer and former Shawnee County auditor. He died Thursday, Dec. 15, 1988, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. CLAUSSEN was born may 25, 1907 in Chicago, the son of Homer and Myrtle WATSON CLAUSSEN. He came to Topeka with his family in 1909, attended Lowman Hill, Clay and Potwin grade schools, and graduated from Topeka High School. While growing up, Mr. CLAUSSEN worked for the the[sic] Steel Fixture Manufacturing Co.; a local ice company; Fraser's Grocers; and Santa Fe shops in Fort Madison, Iowa, Emporia, Gallup N.M., Holbrook, Ariz., Winslow, Ariz., and San Bernardino, Calif. While attending law school, he worked as night librarian at the Washburn Law Library and as a bill collector for Warren M. Crosby Co. He was president of the interfraternity council, a member of the debate team and a member of Sagamore honor society at Washburn University. He graduated from the Washburn Law School in 1929 and began his law practice on July 1 of that year. He was county auditor about 20 years beginning about 1933. Mr. CLAUSSEN served in the navy during World War II. He became a partner in the law firm of Crane, Martin and Claussen in 1951, and retired from legal practice in 1976. He served a four-year term on the Topeka Police and Fire Civil Service Commission, and was chairman for two of those years. He was a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board for several years, and was board chairman during the 1966 Topeka tornado. Mr. CLAUSSEN was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion, the Elks Club, Siloam Lodge No. 225 AF&AM, Scottish Rite bodies, 33rd degree, DeMolay Legion of Honor, the Kansas Bar Association and the Topeka Bar Association, which he served as honorary president of in 1977. He directed several bar shows for the state bar conventions in Topeka. He was past president of Topeka Civic Theatre, and received the Topeka Civic Theatre Hall of Fame award in 1986. He was married to Helen MACK on Sept. 7, 1927 at Lawrence. She died Sept. 14, 1987. Survivors include a son, James L. CLAUSSEN, Topeka; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
