Larner Killed. Oskaloosa Hero Rose From the Ranks to Be an Officer. Oskaloosa. Oct. 6.--(Special)--A telegram from the adjutant general's office, Washington, confirmed today the rumor that Lieut. Leland LARNER was killed in action August 12, in the battle front near Chateau Thierry. He had been made a second lieutenant and transferred from Company B, of the 139th infantry, the original Oskaloosa company, to the 111th regiment of the Twenty-eighth division, which did such heroic work and which was shot to pieces in the battles near Chauteau Thierry, with more than 800 casualities in the regiment. Lieutenant Larner served on the border of the Mexican trouble, was made a sergeant on his merits, went from Camp Doniphan to France in April, was promoted to lieutenantcy in July, and made the supreme sacrifice while gallantly doing his part in one of the greatest battles of history. Memorial services will be held Sunday, October 18, at the Methodist church, Oskaloosa, of which he was a member.
