Dr. E.B. Stouffer Dies In Lawrence.
Lawrence.--Private burial will be this morning in Memorial Park Cemetery here
for Dr. Ellis Bagley STOUFFER, 81, Lawrence, who died Wednesday in a hospital
here after a long illness.
He was a long time administrator and professor of mathematics at the University
of Kansas. He retired as an administrator in 1950, but continued to teach until
1955.
He was born Nov. 7, 1884 at Melbourne, Iowa, the son of George Henry and Mary
Bagley Stouffer. He received the degrees of Bachelor of Science and Master of
Science from Drake University at Des Moines, Iowa, and received a Doctor of
Philosophy degree in 1911 from the University of Illinois at Champaign.
He taught at both Drake and Illinois before moving to Kansas in 1914. He
received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Drake in 1931.
Dr. Stouffer was dean of the Graduate School 24 years and in 1946 became dean of
the university's academic expansion program after World War II.
His positions at the University of Kansas included head of the university
planning council, chairman of the university budget committee, chairman of the
mathematics department, and assistant to the chancellor.
He served twice as chairman of faculty committees in charge of advising the
Board of Regents on selections of a new chancelor.
He was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church at Lawrence, Phi Beta Kappa,
Sigma Xi and several other honorary organizations and mathematics' societies.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; and a daughter, Jean Stouffer, Hays.
A memorial service is planned for next week at Plymouth Congregational Church at
Lawrence. Time has not been set.
