Veteran Telegrapher Opened Station at Hutchinson in 1888. John K. WITHERS, 82, died at the Methodist Home for the Aged Monday morning. He was born in Cedar Grove, Ind., November 29, 1850, and started his career as a railroad telegrapher. After being stationed in Indiana and Ohio several years, he came to Kansas in 1888 and opened the station at Hutchinson for the Hutchinson Railroad Co. He afterward was a station agent in southern Kansas and northern Oklahoma. He came to Topeka in 1900 and entered the grocery business in North Topeka. He was a talented singer and for a number of years was leader of the choir of the Kansas Avenue Methodist church. He afterward was a member of the choir of Lowman Memorial church. He is survived by a son, J. Knote WITHERS, Kirkwood, Mo.; two daughters, Mrs. W.J. BOUCHER, Hydro, Okla., and Miss Sarah WITHERS, Topeka; a sister, Mrs. Sally ZIMMERMAN, Harrison, Ind., and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be at the Sanders-McMichael funeral home Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock.
