Stetter TimeTraveler303@aol.com September 3, 2007, 3:43 am Oakley GRAPHIC, Oakley, Logan County, Kansas; February 28, 1890 February 28, 1890 SUMMERS The present cold snap has checked farmin. Old Rough is visiting friends at Oakley and vicinity this week. We will now proceed to answer inquiries in regard to Summers. We have 10 school buildings, 3 frame and 7 sod. Two of the frame cost $1,000 each, the other about $550. There are 3 more frame school houses under contract for erection this spring. The average wages of teachers is about $30 per month. I have visited several schools and was surprised to find the small children so well advanced in their studies, many of them being in the fourth reader at nine years of age. They were also remarkably graceful and eloquent in declamations and recitations. This we attribute to their good health and consequent clear, vigorous intellcts, there being no poisonous malaria here. Every other section is railroad land. We have a population of about 600 homesteaders. Society is the very best. Preaching is within the reach of all. There are still good chances for cheap, smooth homes in the school and railroad lands. We would advise all wanting farms to come and see it before selling out or locating elsewhere. --ROUGH AND READY Additional Comments: The Oakley GRAPHIC, Oakley, Logan County, Kansas; Friday, February 28, 1890; page 4 column 4.
