HAZEL OLIVE BENDA Hazel Olive (Hurst) Benda was born March 30, 1898 near Achilles. She was the daughter of Joseph Wesley and Ida (Morton) Hurst. She died on Dec. 11, 1981, at the Decatur County Hospital at the age of 83. She was united in marriage to Robert Benda on Oct. 1, 1918 in Oberlin. After graduating from Decatur County High School in 1916 she taught two terms of school, one near Gem, and one at Achilles. Hazel and her husband Bob helped organize and were active in the Achilles Methodist Sunday School and in 1936 they joined the Herndon Covenant Church where she was choir director for several years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob in 1938, two sisters, two brothers, and one grandson. She is survived by two sons, Wesley of Ludell and John of Oberlin; two daughters, Esther Noren of Oberlin and Ida Marie Erikson of Plentywood, Mont.; one sister May Smith of Gem; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Services were held Herndon Covenant Church on Dec. 14 with the Rev. Thomas Garretson officiating. Burial was in the Achilles Cemetery.
