Mr. Benda spent the years of his childhood and young manhood in the land of his birth where he also served his time in the Austrian army. On May 1, 1878, with his mother, three sisters and three brothers he came to America, and the family located near Shelby, Neb. On November 3, 1883, Mr. Benda was united in marriage to Miss Anna Pollak at Columbus, Neb., who also had come to this country from Neustadt. A slight acquaintanceship which had begun in the old country had developed into the more intimate friendship and affection. To this union were born nine children. In the spring of 1905 Mr. Benda moved with his family to a farm near Halford, Kans., where he lived until 1919. During these years all the children, except Rose, had married and settled in homes of their own, leaving Mr. Benda quite alone in the farm work. In the spring of 1919 he retired from the farm and moved to Colby where he resided until his death. Mr. Benda has been for these many years a steady, dependable citizen of his adopted country. He was a great lover of music and good reading from which he got much enjoyable pleasure. While he was the last survivor of a large family of sturdy immigrant stock he had been a sufferer of asthma for fifty years from which he was constantly seeking relief. Several years ago he had a stroke of paralysis and had been almost helpless for the past five years.
