Oscar George Benda Oscar George Benda, the second of nine children born to John and Anna Pollak Benda, December 10, 1885 near Shelby, Nebraska and departed this life October 18, 1973 at St. Thomas Hospital Colby, Kansas at the age of 87 years, 10 months and 8 days. Being baptized as an infant, he lived his life faithfully, simply and sincerely. In March of 1905, he rode the family emigrant car when the family moved to the farm near Halford, Kansas. In 1910, he went to Salina Wesleyan Business College where he met and later married Bertha Henderson. They were married January 21, 1914 in Iola, Kansas. To this union four children were born, Russel Wayne, Nola LaVerne, Robert LeRoy adn Oscar Dale. After marriage, Oscar and Bertha lived for a while at Hoxie, Kansas and Pawnee, Oklahoma returning to Halford to run the store until 1919 when they moved to the family farm. He served his community on the school board, Co-op board, 4-H leader and numerous farm bureau and other civic activities. In 1946 they retired from farming and moved to Colby where the have since resided. They celebrated their golden wedding at the farm home in 1964. He was preceded in death by two children, Ruissel and LaVerne, two grandchildren Gary Gene and Vera Ann Grover, his parents, his only brother Robert, his sisters Ann Neal, Ella Parrott, Minnie Howard, Theressia Kleeman, brothers-in-law Eri Neal, Arch Parrott, Ralph Howard, Otto Kleeman, Arvid Anderson, Francis McKinney and Marty Ryan. He is survived by his wife Bertha, two sons, LeRoy and Dale, two daughters-in-law, eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, three sisters Marie Anderson, Sophia McKinney, Rose Ryan and one sister-in-law Hazel Benda and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Memorial services were held from Harrison Chapel, Colby, Kansas, on October 21, 1973 with a nephew, John Benda, officiating. Interment was in Beulah Cemetery. Casket bearers were: Gordon Parrott, Leo McKinney, Arden Wallace, Scott Benda, Ronald Pfenninger and Richard Kraft.
