Gustafson June 18, 2002 ************************************************************************ Thomas County Herald, December 9, 1986 Robert LeRoy Benda September 23, 1920 - November 29, 1986 Robert LeRoy Benda was born on September 23, 1920 to Oscar George and Bertha Henderson Benda at the family farm home near Halford, Kansas. He departed this life on November 29, 1986 at Citizens Medical center at the age of 66 years, two months and six days. He graduated from Gem High School in 1938 and entered military service on August 27, 1942. he served in the Rhineland, Ardennes, and central Europe. He was honorably discharged on December 28, 1947. LeRoy was united in Marriage to Madine Emmaline Duffey on January 20, 1946 at the Duffey family home. To this union were born two daughters, Christine Louise and Linda Lee. He was a faithful member of the Gen Baptist Church where he served on the board of trustees. Due to illness, he retired from farming the Benda family homestead in 1983 and moved to Lantern Park Manor in January 1986. LeRoy was preceded in death by his wife, Madine, his parents, his sister LaVerne, and his brother, Russell. He is survived by two daughters, Christine and linda, two sons-in-law, four grandchildren and one brother, Dale. Services were held at the Gem Baptist Church, Gen Kansas Tuesday, December 2, 1986. Rev. Claude Burlew officiated. Pallbearers were Harold Duffey, Cleo Duffey, Don Saddler, Chester Duffey, Ray Duffey and Marvin Anderson. Soloist was Mrs. Estelle Bugbee and organist was Mrs Patty Ziegelmeier.
