The new flag which was the cause of so much merriment and joy on Tuesday did not fly from the full height only for a very few short hours. Late Tuesday afternoon the sad news of the death of LeRoy SMITH was received and the flag was immediately lowered to half mast. Le Roy was stationed at Camp Dix, New Jersey, which is usually the last camp which the boys are sent to received their last training before leaving for France. It is understood that he was recently attacked by the Spanish influenza which later developed into pneumonia which was the cause of his death. His mother, Mrs. Emma SMITH, was called last Wednesday and told to come at once for Le Roy was seriously ill. She left at once and reached her destination on last Sunday morning and upon her arrival she found Le Roy to be much improved. She sent a message to her sons in Colby, Floyd and Elbert early Sunday morning in which she stated that their brother was much better but before night his condition had changed for t! he worse and another message was received telling them of the reversed condition. Elbert started immediately for Camp Dix, and from Sunday night until Tuesday evening great hopes were entertained for his recovery--the came the very sad news telling of his death. The remains will be shipped here for burial and are expected to arrive here Friday morning. The date of the funeral service has not yet been set. The Free Press along with the entire community extends to the breaved mother, brothers and sisters, their heartfelt sympathy.
