He was the oldest child of Nathan SHUTT, a minister of the gospel who died in 1861. His mother, Eliza MAUK SHUTT, will be remembered by many of this community as she died here May 15, 1902, at the advanced age of 95 years. John SHUTT was married in 1846 to Mary A LOWERY, of Ohio, who died in 1854. To this union two daughters were born, Mrs Martha LYTSELL of Hale, Mo., and Mrs Eliza HOLMES. The latter still living at Chariton, Iowa. Mr SHUTT was again married in 1855 to Utica KEEFER of Ceylon's Grove, Pa., who was born August 19, 1836. To this union twelve children were born, seven of who are living; Mrs Phillip SWEET and Mrs Josie PRIEST of Seattle, Washington, Mrs Prudie VITTETOE of Abilene, Kansas, Mrs Jessie SAMPSON of Mc Minnville, Oregon, B F SHUTT and Mrs Geo. BENNETT of Greenleaf, Kansas and J R and W L SHUTT of Strong City, Kansas. He united with the Church of Christ when 20 years of age and lived a devoted life for 64 years following. Funeral services were held at Strong City and interment made in the Mt James cemetery. Mr SHUTT lived in this section for years and was an exceptionally fine man.
