Mrs. W.J. Tobey.
This community was shocked Thursday morning with it learned of the death of Mrs.
W.J. TOBEY. Tho she had been ill nearly all summer, very few except her most
intimate friends knew that she was in any serious danger.
Lucy A. HENDERSON was born in Thomaston, Maine, Mary 14th., 1855 and died in
Washington, Kans. Thursday, September 16th, 1909.
On February 4th, 1876, she was united in marriage to Captain W.J. Tobey in the
New "Old South Church," of Boston, Massachusetts. Their honeymoon was spent on
the Captain's ship, the "Santa Clara," making a voyage from New York to
Liverpool, returning in a year to the exact day. Mrs. Tobey made several voyages
with her husband, some of them around Cape Horn.
After giving up the sea-faring life, Captain and Mrs.Tobey came to Washington in
1885, bringing with them their two children Alice and William. They built the
beautiful home on Fourth street where they have lived ever since and where
another child, Lucy was born to them. Their oldest child, Alice, died while
attending college at Rockford, Ill., Will is in Mexico engaged in the mining
business so that but one child, Miss Lucy was at home at the time of their
mother's death.
Mrs. Tobey was "a perfect woman, nobly planned," one whose life was without an
evil thought or an uncharitable action, whose example of pure, high-minded,
Christian living can never be forgotten by those who knew her.
The funeral services will be conducted from the home Sunday afternoon at two
o'clock.
