W. WEST, M. D. Physician and Surgeon To attain the greatest success in any vocation of life, a man should be imbued with love for his chosen calling. Such an inspiration is needed to develop the latent powers of his nature, and to produce the enthusiasm and persistence which spurs on to study and work. In no profession is this fact more true than in that of medicine. The physician imbued with a love for his work is constantly looking out for that which will help attain and increased proficiency and deeper know- ledge. Progress is his watchword and he is ever pressing on from one point of vantage to another, not content to follow the lines of old methods but ever reaching for something higher and better. It is this love for his calling that enables the consciention physician to plod through the pre- paratory mental labor necessary to fit him for the practice of medicine, and that animated him in the careful and patient study of the cases he is called upon to diagnose. By earnest and conscientious efforts he gradually rises to distinction and attains that success in which he may justly take pride. It is a physician of this order that the ADVOCATE speaks in mentioning Dr. H. W. West, whose active practice in Yates Center dates back to 1880. His practice is a general one and extends all over the county, comparing in extent most favorably with any in this section of the state. He has been remarkably successful in the treatment of cararrhal affe- ctions and while not making this a specialty has given such diseases much careful study. Dr. West is a native of Kentucky, and was reared and educated in the Blue Grass state. After finishing a thorough high school education he taught a school for three years, studying for his chosen calling in the mean time, and earning the funds to complete his professional education. He then entered the Louisville Medical College from which noted institution he graduated with high honors in 1880. In December of that year he came to Yates center, and his success as a physician may be atributed not only to his thorough knowledge of medicine and surgery obtained during his collegiate course, but also to a wide range of experience since that time as a successful practitioner. An untiring worker and an unceasing student, all new and approved developments in the science are at his command, and it is the knowledge of these facts that inspires confidence in his ability among his numerous patients. He is a member of the A. O. U. W. and Woodmen fraternal societies, the Christian church, and an honored and respected citizen of this community.
