H. Kaltenback, mayor; J. R. Alvis, clerk; C. W. Pollard, police judge; B. F. Adkins, marshal, Councilment, Thos. Finley, J. C. Clark, J. T. Long, H. T. Dickerson, W. H. Reed. Situated in the southwest corner of Woodson county is the progressive little city forming the caption of this article. It was laid out in 1869 by the Toronto Town Company of which Enoch Reeves was president and Matthew Miller secretary. The growth of the town was slow until the advent of the railroad in 1882 since which time its developement has been remarkable. At present the population is over 600 and the city is steadily increasing in population and commercial prestige. A bank, large flouring mill, and numerous stores carrying large stock of every line of merchandise, good hotel accommodations and enterprising citizens are the principal reasons to which the advancement of the city may be ascribed. Fine churches and schools manifest the moral and intellectual inclinations of the citizens and few cities of its size possess a population who so universally co-operate in the advancement of their town. A local company has recently been formed to prospect for gas and will begin operations in a short time. Toronto possess ever advantage offered by larger towns and prospective investors or homeseekers will be extended every courtesy by the hospitable residents and business men of the city. The meagre representation of the various business interests of the city is owing to the fact that time and want of space precluded a full write up of them all and as a result mention is made of the most important commercial houses. The professions are fully represented by men of marked ability and the ADVOCATE regrets that they also are omitted from individual mention.
