P. Taylor & Son, Yates Center, Kansas Real Estate, Loan and Insurance Agents, Notaries Public. It is now an exploded idea that anyone may become a successful real estate agent. The progress made in this, as in all other branches of business, demands that it should only be followed by men who are reliable and who under- stand every detail of the work. The real estate agent who locates in a town simply because it is experiencing an era of prosperity can no longer compete with the man who has spent years in the community. Investors insist upon knowing who they are dealing with, and sellers must feel sure that they have their property in responsible hands. In these times of real estate activity in Woodson county it is fitting to direct attention to the above firm who for fourteen years have conducted the business in Yates Center. They have on their books many of the choice realty bargains in this section of the state, and purchasers can procure farms from forty acres up to almost any desirable size. Their transations in selling and exchanging farms are among the most extensive in the county. The loan department is an important feature of this business which is steadily increasing owing to the fact that Taylor & Son have ample capital at their command, and loans are made without delay, at low rates of interest and on liberal terms. In the insurance department such staunch and reliable companies as the North British and Mercantile of Edinburg and London, Continental of New York, Delaware of Philadelphia and Merchants of Newark, N. J., are represented. Both members of the firm are notaries public, which is on inestimable aid in the prompt transaction of business requiring such services. They make a specialty of acting as agents for non-resident property holders, collecting rents, paying taxes, and by their interest in such matters keep up the value of such property. W. P. Taylor, the senior member of the firm was born in Fayette, Ohio, in 1839, but moved with the family to Indiana when a child of two years, and in the Hoosier state was reared and educated. During the war of the rebellion he served his country three years in the 24th Indiana Battery, sharing its hardships, battles and honors. After the war he returned to Indiana and was united in marriage to Miss Matilda Sievert. Until coming west in 1869 he was engaged in farming near Crown Point, Indiana, and in that year came to Wilson county near Coyville and continued in the same avocation. AFter the county seat of Woodson county was moved from Kalida to Defiance he moved to the last named town and engaged in the mercantile and later hotel business. He moved to Yates Center in the fall of 1876 and conducted a hotel for the succeeding seven years. The original hotel building erected and occupied by Mr. Taylor was the fifth structure erected in Yates Center. After disposing of his hotel interests he was engaged in mercantile pursuits for two year and then in 1885 established the business he is now prominently identified with. In politices Mr. Taylor is a republican and while prominent in his party, has never been in office, other than justice of the peace for four years. He is a Mason and Odd Fellow, and a member of the K. & L. of F., Triple Tie and the G. A. R. In business, social and fraternal circles W. P. Taylor ranks among the leaders in this community. J. E. Taylor, the junior member of the firm was born in Indiana and came to Kansas when three years of age. He was reared and educated in the Sunflower state and possesses the hustling proclivities of her sons. For nine years he was foreman in a large copying house in Kansas City, which position he relinquished to return to Yates Center in 1898 to engage in the business with his father. Both father and son are men of unquestioned ability and integrity and any movement for the advancement of Yates Center and Woodson county may always rely upon their hearty support. Investors or sellers can do no better than to place their business in the hands of W. P. Taylor & Son.
