Buck, editor of the Toronto Republican, passed beyond this vale of tears. Early Friday evening he complained of feeling ill and retired to his room, requesting his wife not to call him, should he fall asleep, as he was very weary and sleepy. When supper was ready she gently opened the door and found him soundly sleeping. Having some business to look after at a neighbors, she quietly closed the door and went out on her errand. Upon her return, in a very few minutes, she entered the room and found her husband insensible. He was unable to speak or make a loud noise, and at five o'clock he passed peacefully away. The funeral services were not held until Tuesday afternoon, in order that his sons might be present. Edward was unable to come on account of sickness, but Charles arrived from California in time to attend the funeral. The funeral took place from the Presbyterian church, conducted by the Ancient Order of United Workmen and the Degree of Honor, (of which orders he was an honored member) Rev. Robbins preaching the funeral sermon. Mr. Buck was well known and highly esteemed by all and such a concourse of people as followed his remains to their last resting place was probably never before seen in Toronto. Deceased was born in Fayette county, Indiana, February 19th, 1837, but spent most of his youth in Illinois. He married Margaret Mayne in New York City, August 25th, 1863, and to them five children were born, one of whom, a daughter, died in infancy. In 1882 they came to Kansas and located in Yates Center, where he engaged in the publication of The Argus with R. R. Wells as partner. Soon after he bought his partner's interest and was sole owner and editor for a few months only, when the plant was consumed by fire. Not long after this he erected a new building and purchased a new plant. After a few short months he was again burned out. Soon after the last fire he bought a half interest in the News, but in September 1888, sold out to I. M. Jewitt and moved to Toronto, where, up to the time of his death, he was editor and proprietor of the Republican. Mr. Buck was a very intelligent gent- lemand, a magnificent conversationalist and a forcible writer. His friends were legion; his enemies few. Seven years ago he united with the M. E. church in this city, and, until the icy hand of death claimed its victim, had lived an exemplary, christian life. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the grief stricken wife and children in their hour of affliction. Dr. J. L. Buck, situated near Maney Avenue, in the north-eastern portion of this city, was totally destroyed by fire on the last Friday morning. The fire was discovered about 3 o'clock, and had made such progress, that it was ikmpossible to save any of the contents of the house, his wife and child barely escaping.
