OBITUARY: EVLIN, William A.; d 1918 ftp.//files.usgwarchives.net/ks/woodson/obit/evlinwa.txt Contributed by: Mary Celine Scott August 07, 2002 ================================================================ This is my great-uncle, son of Frank W. Elvin and Sarah Jane Mullenex (many variant spellings). Probably most appropriate to post under Wilson (where he was born) tor Woodson where his folks lived at the time of his death (lived in Greenwood before he was born and maybe Sedgewick too...they are a challenge) Obituary (Probably the Toronto Republican) William Allcar Elvin was born March 3rd, 1895 in Wilson County Kansas; died October 7th 1918 at Base Hospital, Ft. Riley, Kansas, aged 23 years, 7 months and 4 days. He was a member of Company D, 30th Machine Gun Battalion. He was a graduate of the Toronto High School, class of 1914, and attended Baker University one year. He was of an unusually king and loving disposition about home and abroad. He was a morally clean, honorable, and after ample preparation for his life's work, in the prime of young manhood he laid his all upon the altar of his country and God accepted both gift and giver. Funeral services were held Friday at 3 P.M. in the Methodist Church, Reb. H.L. Koonce in charge of the services, assisted by Rev. J.L. Thompson and Rev. Charles Arner. The address by Rev. Koonce was sympathetic and bull of comfort. The remnant of the GAR acted as an escort of honor. The body was brought from Ft. Riley by Private Fred Vandegraf, a neighbor boy of Quincy, who is in Co D of the 30th Machine Gun Battalion. Private Vandegraf brought to the stricken parents the word from his officers that Will Elvin was a solider who always did his duty, and that the day he was taken to the hospital the warrant came making him a corporal. His body was laid to rest in the Toronto Cemetery. Burial: Elvin, William A WYO Corpl 1, 30th Machine Gun Bat 10th D. 07 October 1918 Sec C1 S.W.
