Schaaf Death came to Jacob P. Schaaf yesterday morning. Death was the end of almost two years of suffering. Something like a year ago an operation was performed on him and a tumor was removed from his stomach. He recovered rapidly from the operation, and for a few months it seemed he would get back his old time health. Then the old trouble returned and the end came as above told. Jacob P. Schaaf came here, with his family a dozen years ago. He was as industrious a man as ever wore shoe leather. He was a carpenter by trade and enjoyed work in the open. He saved his money and invested judiciously. He bought a drug store here and sold it and bought bank stock and for several years was assistant cashier of the First National Bank. He served a long while on the school board and was treasurer at the time of his death. He was a good citizen, proud of his wife and children, clean in life, and he faced death for months with the same poise with which he met business affairs. He had a certain brusqueness of manner and a direct way of getting to the point at issue that is often a characteristic of men of German blood. But he had the fine integrity, too, that is a characteristic of German blood, and the men who knew Jacob P. Schaaf best, loved him best. And he loved the out-doors. Last September he and the writer went with Dr. Lee one hot day on a long motor ride. The roads were rough and the sun beat down fervidly. We were solicitious as to the effect on him in his physical condition, but to our inquiries he would say, "It is fine, fine." and he spoke again and again of the beauty of the fields and rugged stretches of Eminence Hills. And so men have lived and loved and died since the beginning. And so out of our own little circle men go away and come not again. But Jacob P. Schaaf will linger long in the memory of the men who knew him and ever the wish will rise that he might have lived to see some things realized to which his heart was bound.
