Ohio, and died at Yates Center, Kansas, Aug. 10, 1904, aged 85 years 1 mo. and 3 days. He was married to Angeline Ackley July 10, 1841, in Kendall Co., Ill. To this union were born eleven children, five sons and six daughters. Two sons, one daughter, and wife and mother (who died March 23, 1884) have preceeded him to cross the cold river of "Death". He was married to Mrs. Mary J. Allen, of Yates Center, Kansas, Dec. 1885, who with his eight children, twenty grand-children and four great- grand-children, survive him. Mr. Smith was one of our frontier citizens, having moved his family to Kansas in the year of '60, and locating near Humboldt, Kansas, where he resided until 1870, when he located in Woodson Co., near where is now located the prosperous city of Yates Center, but what was then a houseless plain. In 1861, when the life of our Republic was endangered, and its destiny rested in the hands of the common citizens, he did what he could, and for three and one third years he stood face to face with the foes of our nation, and fought for our union. After the war was over and peace was restored to our nation, he returned again to the old scenes of the frontier, and began anew the struggle of life. He became one of the most extensive farmers of Woodson county, having a well stocked farm of 600 acres, he was one of our enterprising and most reliable business men, he served his fellow citizens two terms as sheriff of this co., and while serving in that capacity he knew no fear and was a terror to the evil doer making one of the most efficient officers of teh law the county has ever had. Mr. Smith was a zealous worker in the cause of education, he was ambitious for his children to have that legacy which no man can take away from them, a good education. One of his sons was a graduate from the Chicago University, and is now in the ministry and four of his daughers have been successful teachers in Woodson Co. The funeral services were held at the family residence conducted by Rev. C. W. Bailey assisted by Rev. Lamb and Rev. Guy, his comrades laid him away in the north cemetery where they have one more to remember when they pay tribute to those who have gone on before.
