P. TAYLOR DEAD W. P. Taylor died at his home in this city this (Thursday) morning at 9 o'clock. Mr. Tayor had been sick for more than a year. He was one of the first settlers of Yates Center and was a man whom everybody respected and admired. The funeral will be held at the family home to-morrow (Friday) afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. F. Kohl, of the Christian church. Obituary next week. The Yates Center News Fri Jul 03, 1914 pg 4 TAYLOR William Preston Taylor, one of the earliest residents of Woodson county, died at 9 o'clock last Thursday morning at his home in Yates Center, after an illness of thirteen months. Mr. Taylor came to Kansas from Indiana in 1869, locating first at Defiance and shortly afterward coming to Yates Center. He owned the first hotel erected in Yates Centery and for over forty years was prominent in the business life of the town and community. To him was due much of the upbuilding of the town in its younger years, and through his realty business he attracted many settlers to Woodson county farms. He was a veteran of the Civil war, serving in the Twenty-fourth, Indiana Artillery from Nov. 29, 1863 to the close of the rebellion. He was in practically every great battle waged by the Union army of the west, fighting at Shiloh, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge and Vicksburg, as well as participating in Sherman's memorable march to the sea. At the close of the war he returned to Indiana and in March, 1866, married Miss Matilda Sievert, sister of one of his comrades in the 24th artillery. Mrs. Tayor with their four children, W. A., J. E., Miss Gertrude and Mrs. Patrick Lavy, survive his death. Mr. Taylor was born in Howard county, Ohio, March 9, 1839. He was one of a family of nine brothers, all of whom preceded him in death. Two of his brothers, John and Jacob, followed him to Yates Center and in the town's pioneer days, their deaths occurring here within the past several years. Mr. Taylor was a member of the Masons, Odd Fellows an A. O. U. W. Funeral services were under Maasonic auspices and were held at his residence last Friday afternoon. The services were conducted by the Rev. W. F. Kohl, pastor of the Christian church. Interment was in Yates Center cemetery. ----- The Woodson County Advocate Fri Jun 26, 1914 pg 8 Death of W. P. He was one of the pioneer residents of Yates Center, coming here in an early day. He was actively engaged in the real estate business with his son, Bert, until about a year ago when his health commenced to fail. Deceased was one of the best known men in the county. A volume could be written of his charitable deeds, but it is sufficient to say that they live in the hearts of those whom he befiended and in the memories of those who knew him best.
